Last week Joel Feldman spoke with teens in driver’s education classes in Colorado’s St. Vrain Valley School District about distracted driving. In order to demonstrate just how distracting cell phone conversations can be the teens participated in a cognitive distraction exercise.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) , in collaboration with the Michigan State Police, recently released a new PSA video in its fight to reduce distracted driving injuries and deaths. The video is of a sportscaster doing the play by play of a distracted driver who is spending some time behind bars.
University of Colorado students are part of a project that will develop a distracted driving program aimed at college students. The CU students are working in conjunction with the Bacchus network, a national leader in college safety programs, with funding provided by the Colorado DOT.
US Secretary of Transportation Ray La Hood announced that fourteen-year old Hah’mari Watson of Sanford, Florida, was the winner of the Distracted Driving Design Contest for creating the “Text & Wreck” icon. Hah’mari had been involved in a motor vehicle crash with family members and it prompted her to enter the contest.
Numerous events were planned to help youth leaders from across the country develop distracted driving prevention programs that they can take back to their local communities.
In Its Community to Prevent Distracted Driving Deaths and Injuries Morgan Robinson, Injury Prevention Coordinator and Educator for Borgess Trauma Services in Kalamazoo, Michigan has been working with the Casey Feldman Foundation and EndDD.org to speak with local high school students about distracted driving.
More than 50,000 teens have seen the EndDD.org high school distracted driving presentation across the country. All of the speakers report that parents are not role modeling safe driving behaviors for their teens.
In a press conference today held at the State House in Providence, Rhode island, Joel Feldman and Dianne Anderson joined trial lawyers and elected officials to announce an initiative that will result in every teen in Rhode Island seeing the EndDD.org/60forSafety distracted driving presentation.
