New York’s Governor Cuomo is Serious About Saving Lives By Preventing Distracted Driving

by Joel D. Feldman

New York state was one of the earliest states to enact laws restricting motorists’ cell phone use. Using a hand held device while driving would result in a citation if the vehicle was pulled over for another reason. On July 14th New York took another major step to protect its residents, particularly teens, from the dangers of using hand-held devices while driving.

The new law allows law enforcement officials to stop any driver observed driving while using a hand held device, cell phone or texting. The law also provides stiffer penalties for drivers who are in violation of the law. Governor Cuomo’s dedication to saving lives was influenced by having 16 year-old daughters. He said that the new law would be particularly helpful in protecting those who are the least experienced drivers and the drivers most likely  to be distracted. We’ve lost too many lives already and we’ve lost too many young people already,” he concluded.

We agree and applaud all efforts to make the roads safer for everyone.
