We know looking at our phones while driving is not a good idea, but when we hear a notification, we can’t resist the temptation. That’s why Do Not Disturb, Focused Driving, and other notification blocking settings (DND settings) are so important. When they are used you won’t be tempted to look at your phone and you can avoid crashes. And, when friends try to text you they will get your customized response telling them you won’t respond now because you are driving. That’s how to influence your friends and help them be safer.

Notification Blocking Settings on Our Phones Are Barely Being Used

Today less than 25% of iPhone owners are estimated to be using DND settings on their phones. By using these features, we can reduce smartphone use while driving, reduce distracted driving crashes and save lives. The more drivers use DND the less crashes. It’s as simple as that.

Join us to promote the use of DND settings You can help us make distracted driving socially unacceptable. Make a Tik Tok video and enter our contest.

Students from high schools in the United States are eligible to submit videos up to 1 minute in length Prizes will be awarded for high school student TikTok videos as set forth below.

Topics to be Addressed in Videos

The following are suggested issues that can be explored for contest submissions. One of the judging criteria will be the extent to which the suggested issues are referenced, utilized or incorporated into submissions. Where studies or surveys are cited, students may, but are not required, to refer to those studies or surveys.

1. Why do you use DND settings?
2. Why does DND make sense for you? Does it improve your driving? Does it allow you to focus more?
3. Why should others use these settings? Why should your friends be motivated to turn on this feature?
4. Show and/or talk about your customized response that is sent when someone tries texting you when you are driving
5. How do you use DND? Make a tutorial explaining how simple it is to turn on the feature.
6. Share a personal connection to the feature and how it makes you a better driver.
7. Whatever else about the use of DND settings works for you!

Rubric

The contest will be judged on a variety of factors by the judges:

• Persuasive message for the use of DND
• Focus on why people should use DND
  • Either discussion or visually showing why
• Creativity (use of music and different features to engage audiences)
• Outreach and virality on the social media platform

Prizes

There will be nine winners for the video contest. Winning videos may be posted on the websites of the organization working together to promote DND settings.

    • Silver (3 Winners): $ 200
    • Bronze (5 Winners): $100

Rules and Regulations

• • 1. High School Students from all schools are eligible to participate.
    2. Submissions must be original, and not have been entered in any other contest or disseminated publicly before contest winners are announced in October of 2022. Submissions must not contain any copyrighted or protected materials, content or music. See Waiver and Submission Form. 3. Videos must be less than one minute and must focus on some aspect of use of DND settings.
    3. Students cannot actively participate in harmful or unsafe acts for purposes of the video (ie. drunk driving, distracted driving, texting while driving, etc.).
    4. Videos should promote the use of the DND settings, highlight the settings, or demonstrate proper use of the technology.
    5. Entries will be judged on adherence to requirements, specifically suggested topics, creativity and message.
    6. Students will be asked to make a personal commitment to use Do Not Disturb While Driving and commit to safe and undistracted driving.
    7. The contest will open September 28, 2022 for submissions and application forms received no later than midnight October 12, 2022.
    8. After review of all entries, contest sponsors reserve the right in their sole discretion to determine whether prizes shall be awarded.
